Artist Statement:
The main concept that motivates my work is the union of spirituality and art, and whether or not we can discover real truths through the creation of art. I seek to make old ideas anew again because I believe in rediscovering ideas we have deemed old, clichéd, and done with. I ultimately wish to explore the importance of configuration i.e. shape, form, the defining difference, the meaning of the way things are.
Scale is an important issue to my work because my principle subject matter deals with gothic architecture. Thus my works are large in scale to convey a sense of environment. The use of paint as media is important because of its ties with the abstract expressionists, who heavily influence my work, mainly the philosophical ideas that eventually lead to a fusion/ blur of art and life.
My process consists of pre planned imagery along with unpredicted elements of image making. The struggle with these two approaches adds to the content of my work by creating a battle of opposites; controlled versus uncontrolled image making.
My work contains references to Gothic architecture. I am also heavily influenced by iconography, The Eucharist, Abstract expressionism, and Vincent Van Gogh who I believed exemplified an Incarnationalist approach to the creation of art.
The themes of my work are: the sacramentality of the world, the old made anew, the relationship of symbol and reality (signifier and signified), the relationship of dichotomies, and mysticism.
Unique aspects in my work are the juxtaposition of abstract imagery with illusionist, pictorial imagery.
I seek to say the old anew, I seek to understand configuration, I seek to understand the relationship between spirituality and art, and whether this relationship can lead to any real truths.
